Destinations: Plakias, Crete

A world away from the crazy resorts of the north coast the Plakias Youth Hostel, set in an attractive olive grove, is a gem of a find.

The manager, Chris, delights in looking after his guests and makes sure that they are aware of the attractions and activities available nearby.

View of Plakias and the gorge beyond

The are magnificent walks that start just from the hostel and spectacular scenery is to be found all around.

Several beaches are within walaking distance and for the more adventurous there are great number just a short hike away.

Places to stay

The Plakias Youth hostel itself is split up into eight bedded dorms with a patio and chairs for each, there is plenty of storage space and the rooms are cleaned daily.

It is easy to make new friends at this hostel as the vibe is chilled and personal. As soon as you arrive you know you are in a special place and a welcome drink confirms it!

There are also a number of hotels in the resort as well as private accomodation. These can all be booked in advance and should be for high season.

Things to do

There are plenty of restaurants to keep you well fed although, to be honest, the level is pretty standard. That being said it is value for money and great fresh fish if you look around.

Walking is a major draw here and the main trip is the Samaria Gorge. This is a big one and best to do a few walks first before embarking on this spectacular hike. Transport can be arranged locally and expect to spend a whole day.
